Subject: Blabbering Blogger

Comment:  I completely agree with your blog post about continuing to write and practicing writing does make a person a better writer.  I have found even with my school work that if I don’t challenge myself, my brain, and my writing skills on a day-to-day basis, I will lose some ground.  It reminds me of playing tennis and practicing tennis.  If I go a week or two without playing then it will take a little while to get my skills back.  I will continue to write after this class. I’m not sure if I will “blog” because I don’t like everyone knowing about my personal life, but I think you’ve done a great job on your blog.  I really enjoy reading yours from time to time.

Subject:  Intro to PR for All?

Comment:  When I blogged on this topic, I said Intro to PR was not beneficial for all majors. I think it’s definitely beneficial for certain majors, but for let’s say a chemistry major, I wouldn’t think this class would be as necessary. I do see your point about opening doors and letting others see the opportunities that public relations can offer.

Subject:  What Have I Enjoyed Most About Blogging This Semester?

Comment:  Blogging was a new experience for me as well.  I was very anxious and nervous about having to blog when I first heard about it, but now it’s not so bad.  I don’t like having to have a specific topic, however, I don’t know if I would want to write about personal experiences and emotions for this class. I could see how a blog for my profession for the job I work for would be very helpful in promoting what the company or agency offers.

Comment:  This is a great example of how Public Relations is shown in the real world. The public needs to know that cancer still changes people’s lives for the worst. Being able to find a cure for cancer would be a dream come true, but there needs to be persuasion ads like these to raise awareness for others and to donate money in order to fund the research.

Subject:  Twitter… Is it a Waste of Time or a Useful Social Media Site?

Comment:  I personally do not have a Twitter for a couple reasons. For one, I feel like I don’t have the time to keep track of all these various social networking sites. I am on Facebook and now I have a blog for this class, however, I will be taking PR Writing next semester and heard I will have to create an account for that class. Another reason why I haven’t gotten a Twitter yet is because it has taken me a while to get used to the features in this blog, so I needed to get used to this before I got something else. Twitter seems as though I will also have to get used to it. Facebook, for me, is the easiest social networking site.

Subject:  Relating PR Professionals to Flight Attendants

Comment:  My aunt was a flight attendant and she, as well, as your mom do see public relations type jobs in their jobs. Both careers have to accommodate others in the public and make sure that those people feel OK and are comfortable. I, for one, hate flying, so it is nice to see flight attendants help others in their flying fears. Public relations and flight attendants are very common in the area of verbal and non verbal communication skills. It can either make or break a professional deal or it can make people comfortable or not.

My Blogging Experience

To be completely honest, this semester is the first time I had ever set up or used a blog.  I had so many questions and was so confused as to how to set up the blog and how to make sure the post goes to where it needed to go in order to get credit for the assignment.  I had friends who used blogs for certain things such as wedding planning or just “blogging” about anything.  The blog idea seemed really cool, however, with school and tennis, I never really found the need to get a blog because I knew I wouldn’t update it or write blog posts on a regularly basis.  Now, that I am getting used to the blog, how it is used, and the ways I can make it my own, I think I will continue to use a blog.  I might change this one up a little bit, or start a new one, with one blog being strictly personal and one blog being school or work related.

I feel like if I had a personal blog, I would update it occasionally, but not update it on a daily or even weekly basis.  I enjoy the idea and writing really helps me think out my decisions and thought processing, but the idea of it being made public on the internet doesn’t settle with me.  I don’t like other people who aren’t really my friends knowing every little thing that went on that particular day in my life and what my emotions were.  I know that when I get an internship or a job, I will be required to keep up with a blog which I don’t mind because I enjoy writing.  I like the idea of keeping people updated with work related things or corporate idea.

Intro to PR is Not Beneficial to Other Majors

Personally, I do not see taking an Intro to Public Relations course if a student is not a communication arts major.  There are so many other courses that would be more beneficial that are more in their area of study.  For instance, if you are a marketing major, yes, there are public relations aspects to your daily life in a job, however, it may benefit that student to have more specific marketing classes and learn minor public relations tasks during real life experience.  A student either has writing skills or they don’t, so going to a Intro to Public Relations class will not help a student learn how to write.

A great family friend of mine is very high up in a financial public relations firm , and she says if a student is a good writer and good communicator then they will get a job when they graduate.  She says you can teach new graduates what to do in that specific job, but if you don’t have writing and communication skills, they won’t hire those particular students.

I feel like Intro to Public Relations is introducing a student to what the public relations firms and organizations have to offer, however, if you know you want to be a PR major and that’s what you want to do day in and day out in a career, then a student should learn how and what they need to do to succeed, and usually that is with real life experience.

Why do I use Facebook?

Facebook has become the largest growing social networking site in the world.  People of all ages, races, backgrounds, socioeconomic status, etc. use Facebook as a way to connect with others.   When I was in sixth grade I had a MySpace, but some of my friends had older siblings who were in college using Facebook.  In 2002, when I was 12, no one could use Facebook except for college students.  The only way to get a Facebook was to have for example, a “@georgiasouthern.edu” email address.  It would, then, go to that particular email and the student would have to confirm it was indeed that person.  Since that time, Facebook has been open to everyone, and millions and millions of people have joined.  I use Facebook because I recognize how to use it.  I learned at a young age this particular site, and it is familiar to me.  Although I have heard of Twitter and Google Reader, I feel like I would have a hard time learning how to use those.  I’ve never heard of StumbleUpon, Diggs, or Posterous.  Another reason why I use Facebook is because it was the original social networking site besides MySpace that many people got hooked on to.  I feel like now, there are other social networking sites like Twitter, but those who don’t want to keep up with more than one account, like me, would use the one they first account they signed up on.  I use Facebook to keep up with my friends, my family, and acquaintances that I haven’t seen in a while through Facebook.  Facebook has made it easy to look at pictures, comment on others’ walls, keep up with one another through messaging and chat, and find people you haven’t seen in a long time.  The only other site I am pretty familiar with is Twitter, and if I’m correct, a person can’t post pictures.  You strictly can just tweet.  I use Facebook because all around I am able to do what I want to do on it and keep up with “friends”.

Persuasion — Stand Up 2 Cancer

Stand Up 2 Cancer

This video is an example of persuasion.  It is persuasion because the video is trying to get people to do something about cancer.  They want people to realize that cancer is an issue in the world, and what kinds of things can people do about it.  If you talk to anyone, they have experienced cancer themselves, or at least had a friend or family member that has had to deal with cancer.  There are millions and millions, if not billions of dollars going into cancer research each year trying to figure out a cure, and to best understand how a person gets it.

Persuasion, in my own words, is how someone gets another person to do something.  They are persistent and tell them the positives and/or negatives about a situation to either continue the action or not.  According to dictionary.com, persuasion is to “prevail a person to do something by advising or urging”.  I believe that this video is an effective way to get people’s attention on how important it is that others understand cancer.  It is important for others to know that there does need to be something done in order to find a cure, but it is necessary for people to understand that there is research going on, but people need to STAND UP 2 CANCER!  I think people sometimes take the back burner and think others will figure it out, which might be true, but if everyone took that stand then nothing would get done about it.

This video is effective in how catchy it is.  I think people get the message because it is in a song and it’s a catchy, funny song.  Along with people recognizing the song, people will then listen to the words and what kind of message the song/video is trying to get across to others.

Right now there is a walk going on that breast cancer patients, survivors, family and friends walk for three days to raise money to help with cancer research. To find out more information go to:  http://www.the3day.org/site/PageServer

Compare and Contrast Public Relations and Publicity

The difference between public relations and publicity is that the actual public relations firm does the publicity.  The publicity is what is put out in the media either written out, advertised, or what gives the audience a rise of attention.  Public relations is promoting the good in an organization, company, government or individual through others.  It is the practice of managing communication between an organization and the public.  Public relations is used to build relationships between other people, the community as a whole and other organizations.  Publicity is the spreading of information to gain public awareness to a product, person, service, cause or organization.  An example of public relations and publicity is say the company, Subway.  The public relations aspect of the company is Subway because it is promoting the food to others.  The publicity would be the saying “5 dollar footlong” because it is a catchy phrase, it advertises and promotes the product, and it raises the attention from the audience because the sub is so cheap.  Another example is the Jiff peanut butter.  The commercial of “choosey mom’s choose Jiff” is a catchy phrase that promotes the certain kind of peanut butter.  Both of these examples are the way in which public relations and publicity relates to each other to promote their products, however, they complement each other.

Myths and Preconceptions of Public Relations

There have been multiple myths and preconceptions of the field of Public Relations.  Many people think this type of job is just a glamorous job with no responsibilites, organization or time management.  There have been multiple movies filmed of Public Relations jobs that have portrayed this major as one that is all partying and going to special events.  The movie that comes to my mind is “Sex in the City” with Samantha Jones.  In the movie she is all about going to events, drinking and eating elaborate food.  She thinks everyone is supposed to put all the attention on her when in reality that is not true.

For me, I have seen first hand how a Public Relations event takes place.  There is not much glamour to the job except when the event is taking place and going on.  In order to pull off an event, groups of people have to put in many hours and extra work to pull something off in a timely manner by the deadline.  One example that I will hopefully have the opportunity to internship at next summer is USTA (United States Tennis Association).  There will be a professional tennis tournament being held in Atlanta next summer at the end of July.  In the specific details of the job it states, “expect long hours and working extra the week prior to the event and the week of the tournament.”  For me, working at an event such as a professional tennis tournament is my dream job, so that would be right up my alley.  I would enjoy working the long hours, being responsible for putting on one of the biggest events that leads up to the U.S. Open in New York, and organizing the event so it runs smoothly.  It just all depends on how a person perceives different ideas of how a company or organization runs an event or special occasion smoothly.
